An Introduction To Sand Filters

The sand that you use in your sand filter for your pool is going to be a special grade of sand, specifically designed for your filter.

It’s usually around 45-55mm and is designed to trap dirt particles within the range of 20-100 microns.

When your sand filter collects dirt it actually gets better at it as it goes along, trapping even more and more dirt.

You’ll know that it’s time to backwash the dirt out of the sand filter when the pressure gauge reaches the specific reading, usually around 10 pounds of pressure. Because each pool sand filter is different, this will vary from model to model.

If you are using soft swim or other biguanide chemicals you will be required to clean the filter about every year or so to prevent it from gumming-up with buildup.

What can happen is that oils can get trapped and clog up the filter and into the and bed and after a while because of the water being forced over the grains of the sand it will wear them down and they will be come much less effecient. Basically, as soon as they lose their rough edges, they can’t trap dirt anymore.

If you decide to use sparkling water you can use a combination of chemicals that will get all the jobs done that you need, such as circulation, filtration and sanitation. All of these are important steps and none should be skipped.

Skipping one of them can cause many issuses that can ruin the filter or the pool. Just as it’s important to get the right sized sand filter (When in doubt, always go bigger) it’s important to use the right amount of chemicals and to change out the sand at the right time.
